Syracuse University Distance Learning for M.B.A. in Business Administration

By: , Category: Syracuse University

An MBA, or master’s in business administration, helps promote your career opportunities and amplify your income.

However, many working adults and professionals cannot devote their time typically required to attend traditional campus-based programs.

Many colleges and universities (including Syracuse University) realize this and thus have begun to offer online MBA degrees in an effort to accommodate these students. An online MBA from Syracuse University almost ensures you a high-paying career in the business sector.

As we know, when choosing a school for online degree program, accreditation is an important factor to consider. Founded officially in 1870, Syracuse University has been accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education since 1921. Its Whitman School of Management is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

AACSB offers internationally recognized, professional accreditation for business and accounting programs to award a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree.

According to U.S. News & World Report, the Whitman School of Management has been named one of the best online graduate programs in the nation and was listed as one of the top 50 part-time iMBA programs in 2010.

An Overview of iMBA Program in Syracuse University

Online MBA program in Syracuse University, called iMBA, is a limited-residency program offered by the Whitman School of Management. Speaking of “limited-residency”, some of you may be wondering: what does this mean?

As far as we know, most online degree programs give students the freedom and convenience to study anywhere, without the need to travel to a school during the enrollment. However, unlike these programs, Whitman iMBA program requires students to attend one-week residency three times per year during their enrollment in the program.

During the residency week, students attend classes asynchronously through a web-based course management system and take exams. Classes are taught by the same instructors who teach in the full-time MBA program through BlackBoard technology. These classes are actually similar to traditional campus-based classes, but with more intense class time and concentrated material.

In fact, in addition to faculty, iMBA program features the same curricular content and degree as the full-time MBA program at the Whitman School.

Outside residency class hours, students can spend time doing their assignments, communicating with classmates and instructors, attending professional development events as well as preparing for upcoming exams. You know final exams are usually taken on campus on the first day of the following residency.

Be noted that the residency week is the start of the program experience each term. Residencies are provided on the SU campus in January and August in Syracuse, NY. No meeting times are required per week, though classes may involve weekly assignments.

You should know that the iMBA program requires a total of 54 credits, in which 12 credits for core courses and 6 credits for elective courses are included. Students typically take two classes (6 credits) each semester and complete the iMBA program in 3 years. However, to accelerate completion, students can choose to take up to 3 courses in a semester.

Um…considering how many classes to take each semester? This may not be the time to consider the problem. Instead, you should figure out whether you can meet the admission requirements to qualify to complete Whitman iMBA program coursework. To be considered for admission, you must meet the minimum requirements including:

• Holding a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a regionally accredited college or university

• Having one year of professional full-time work experience

In addition, the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is also required unless you have 5 years or more of professional work experience. For those whose native language is not English, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) may be required.

One point, I have to say, is that admission to the iMBA program is highly selective. This means even though you meet the minimum requirements, you won’t be automatically admitted to the program. Applicants will be evaluated individually, with many other factors being taken into account, such as professional experience and accomplishments, prior academic success and communication skills as evidenced in the application essays.

Anyway, be noted that the admissions committee will not review your application until all of the required materials have been received. Required materials typically include:

• Official transcripts of academic credentials (from your degree bearing undergraduate university) – Keep in mind that you have your official transcripts included in a sealed envelope with the university seal, stamp or signature across the back flap. Be aware that unofficial transcripts are required from each additional post-secondary educational institution for which 9 credit hours or more of coursework was taken.

• Two letters of recommendation – It is highly recommended that your letters of recommendations are from those who know you in an occupational setting. Also, at least one of the recommendations is written by a current or previous supervisor.

• Resume – This should include your educational and professional information.

• GMAT reports (Program Code: NGO-SB-51) – A GMAT test score is valid for 5 years. If you have taken the test more than once, your highest score will be taken into consideration.

• Two essays – The essay questions can be found on the online application.

All these application materials should be sent to:

If you are an international applicant, in addition to the above-mentioned requirements, there are two additional requirements for you.

• TOEFL, IELTS or Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)

TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Academic are required as part of application requirements for international applicants. As an international applicant, you have to ask the testing center to send a current official score report to Syracuse University. You may also choose to upload a copy of their unofficial score to your online application.

To order your test scores, select the Whitman iMBA. Or use the following codes: TOEFL (institution code: 2823, department code: 02) and PTE Academic (5LD-BQ-10).

Once all of your application materials are received, you will be contacted in person or by phone, for a personal interview.

• Student Visa

Now, you already know that the Whitman iMBA program requires 3 weeks of residency during enrollment. Thus, international students may need a Certificate of Eligibility (Form 1-20) to apply for a (F-1) student visa or other types of student visa to meet the residency requirements.
